The business world has changed significantly in the past few decades. The pace at which technology has evolved is unheard and unseen. The fourth industrial revolution is bringing advanced robotics and automated systems, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, advanced materials and biotechnology. These technologies generate massive amount of data. Information is the lifeblood of every company, as is the ability to identify, gather, extract, and analyze this raw data. There is thus a need to transform these facts and figures into useful information that can be used as a catalyst for constructive decision making, cutting costs, improving operations and identifying new business opportunities.
Annual demand for the fast-growing new roles of data scientist, data developers and data engineers will reach nearly 7,00,000 openings by 2020 (Forbes, May 2017). Currently, data science and analytics(DSA) jobs remain open on an average of 45 days, five days longer than the market average. Machine learning, big data, and data science skills are the most challenging to recruit and potentially can create the greatest disruption to ongoing product development and go-to-market strategies if not filled (The Quant Crunch, 2017). 39% of Data Scientists and Advanced Analyst positions require a Master’s or Ph.D. To bridge this gap, Deccan Education Society and IBM formed a research partnership to accomplish the goal of closing the data science and analytics skills gap through data-driven insights shared between higher education and industry. A PGD-ITM with concentration in Business Intelligence/Data Analytics/Data Science/Cyber Security, will be able to make valuable contribution to any company/business, with exceptional proficiency in the science of business modelling, database systems, data warehousing, data mining and benchmarking. The proposed PGD-ITM will be one of its kind as it will have industry designed courses in the form of electives. These electives will fetch an International certification from IBM. These industries enabled courses will be taught by faculties trained by IBM and IBM professionals.
